Netflix has announced that Iron Fist will not get a season 3. Wait, what?!
In a joint statement to Deadline, Marvel Television and Disney stated:
“Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix, Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the Immortal Iron Fist will live on.”
The report from Deadline goes on to speculate on the meaning behind that final "live on" line in the statement.
Apparently Disney wanted Iron Fist, which returned in it's second season to significantly improved ratings, to continue at Netflix while they continued to develop new shows for their upcoming streaming service. The Marvel Cinematic Universe would spin off certain characters most notably Loki series starring Tom Hiddleston and a Scarlet Witch series with Elizabeth Olsen to join content from other Universes owned by Disney.
With the cancellation of Iron Fist, the Deadline report alludes to conversations being had about continuing Iron Fist on the coming Disney streaming service along with the planned Marvel shows and Star Wars content like the Jon Favreau produced Star Wars series.
While this is bad news for Finn Jones, the amazing Jessica Fenwick and others, the other Netflix/Marvel series will live on. Pre-production on Jessica Jones season three is imminent and all signs point to Luke Cage announcements soon. The Punisher is coming in 2019 and Daredevil season three has had nothing but rave reviews so expect more seasons to come.
