Black Widow Trailer: Still dead, still awesome

This movie trailer was recently released to much excitement, and confusion. A resounding theme with big franchises like Marvel is that they don’t always release movies in an exact chronological order due to the sheer diversity and complexity of the characters and storylines, which more often than not all converge in a movie like Avengers: Endgame, which ties it all up and shows the viewer where each piece of the puzzle fits in. That being said, Black Widow is a prequel, and not a sequel to the aforementioned Marvel summer blockbuster.

In a cinematic culture where no one remains dead, Black Widow, a role reprised by the lovely Scarlett Johanssen. is still dead. We lost her in the pursuit of the soul stone in Endgame, an act that left many fans like me wondering if the soul stone was actually worth it. I wouldn’t have been half as sad if Hawkeye was the one to die, considering that given how close they were, no matter who died, it might still have been the same outcome. However, Scarlett reassured us true fans that in spite of her persistent death, we will get closure. We would have wanted her back instead, but sure, closure. This movie is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe roughly sometime between Iron Man 2 and the first Avengers movie, if I am correct, and it is an origin movie of sorts for the Romanov character.

The trailer is awesome and delivers excitement the way that a Marvel movie can. I can confirm that at least some of the movie is set in Budapest, harking back to a conversation between Hawkeye and Black Widow in the first Avengers movie where they mentioned that they remembered Budapest very differently. Maybe we will finally get the closure that none of us asked for, or needed on that discussion. The trailer is action packed and gritty, and it is definitely going to be worth watching in the cinema, instead of waiting for the inevitable torrent downloads.

I already mentioned that Scarlett would star in the titular role, but there were also some other interesting cast choices. David Harbour from the beloved Stranger Things franchise would be in it as Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle would be Mason, while Rachel Weisz stars as Melina. I expect a cameo from at least one of Iron Man, Hawkeye, Captain America, and even possibly Winter Soldier. There was also a scene from the trailer where we saw someone wielding a bow and arrow, who I briefly thought was Hawkeye, but more keen fans said bore a striking resemblance to the Taskmaster. We shall confirm this as time goes on.

This is the way I see this movie. While I am excited about watching another Marvel movie, I feel nothing. Black Widow is dead. This is probably the last movie we will see her in in this cinematic universe. I’m sure she would have a cool back story, but I can honestly not say that I needed closure. She died, I was sad, I moved on. It feels like best case scenario, this movie would make me miss her more, than it would make me accept that she’s gone. I guess I could just look forward to whatever other projects she has lined up, because I really like Scarlett Johanssen. Wow. I sound like I’m in the stages of grief. It’s just a movie!

This movie would be released on May 1, 2020. It would be the first movie in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We can expect to see at least one more trailer before the movie is released, which would shed even more light on the casting and direction of this movie. I intend to enjoy this and hope it goes well.
