I LOVE THIS MOVIE! I HATE THIS MOVIE!
Now that we have gotten that out of the way, let us move forward with the rest of the review.
In my entire life, I have never been so emotionally engaged by any work of non-fiction as this movie was able to accomplish. Truth be told, I was not really excited to see this movie for the single reason that I was still recovering from my previous best movie this year, Black Panther. I felt like I needed more time in between two such huge movies especially for me as a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fair to say, I was not ready for this movie. At all.
Going into seeing it on the opening weekend, I had no doubt that it was going to be a huge hit, but I just did not expect such awesomeness. I thought it would be like the guy who wants to impress a girl so much he over-complicates the meal he has made, but there are enough savory elements in it to make her smile at the end of the meal. Instead we got a Rachael Ray dish, which even though it has one million elements, you can't help but be blown away with each bite.
I am going to list 5 things that made me so happy about this movie. There shall be only one spoiler in this article, so let's see if you can figure it out.
1.Thanos is the best super-villain EVER
Thanos in this movie was huge, both physically and figuratively. For some parts, this movie felt like an origins story for him, and it was a very compelling one. The pacing of this movie was such that it did not come across as such, but I can assure you 100% you will not leave this movie hating Thanos. In some previous Marvel movies, we have seen glimpses of him here and there without knowing the true extent of his power, but we were shown the full brunt of it in this. Before this movie, my all-time best villains were The Joker and Bane from the Batman series, but Thanos now owns that crown comfortably. His first fight in this movie will probably permanently de-mystify one of the avengers for you.
2. All characters mattered
One huge concern for a lot of fans of this franchise was how Marvel would take such a huge cast of characters who had previously not appeared alongside each other before, and make them work, but wow, they did it. Perfectly. Every single Avenger mattered, even Falcon! Each main character was giving adequate screen time, and we didn't have a single useless character in this movie. The responsibility for avenging was spread appropriately, and the balance and chemistry was just perfect.
3. The Iron Man suit is awesome
Just from the trailer, you could tell that Tony Stark was going to bring it in this movie. That suit has always had more than its fair share of bells and whistles, but it was doing so many things in this movie, that for some of them, I honestly could not keep up. I want to describe more, but I have already used my one spoiler spot (or have I?). This is the best iteration of the Iron Man suit ever, and even though I was done with the Iron Man series, I would actually look forward to another one if it is ever made, just for the suit. And if RDJ is still Tony Stark. That man was born for that role.
4. Infinity Wars indeed
This movie tied up a lot of its sub-franchises so nicely, and you could see a healthy chemistry between the Guardians of the Galaxy and Spiderman, for example. As expected from a Marvel movie, there was a lot of world-hopping, but it all tied up nicely with the general direction of this movie, and each piece seemed relevant. This is a movie that you have to see a second or third time to fully appreciate because there were so many elements to it, that you definitely missed a few things the first time you saw it. I already said all the main characters mattered, including the expected gratuitous cameo by Uncle Stan Lee.
5. DC will NEVER catch up
It is always fun to see Marvel and DC fanboys arguing about which brand is superior, a proper nerd-fest in the right company, but after this movie, even DC fans knew what we have known for a long time: there is no comparison, and there is no contest between both brands. Before I went to see Justice League, I said DC needed a huge win to even get in the same race as Marvel, but that movie fell well short. This movie extended the gulf in quality between both franchises, and I can definitively say they will never, ever be on par. Case in point, you would be hard pressed to mention a bad Marvel movie, but everyone can mention at least two DC movies that let them down massively.
I mentioned at the beginning that I hated this movie, and that is because I do not like the emotional hold this movie had on me. I cannot see any other Marvel movie now because this was just too much. But I can definitely say this is the best movie I have seen in a very long time.
Go see this movie in the cinema. It is worth the experience. There are few movies that will set down a marker for a franchise, and this is definitely one of the ones that will give Marvel credibility for years to come.
By the way, did you find the only spoiler from the movie in this article? ;)
